Minutes 10/24/2007

October 25, 2007

Wednesday’s meeting was a “social” meeting.
It was spent playing various card games and board games.

Here are the minutes from the meeting:

Item 1)
-President Loses Presidency-
President Friend gambled the presidency on a game of 3D tic-tac-toe.
He lost.
Nate and Michelle are now the acting club presidents for the next two weeks.

Item 2)
-Probability Talk-
Graduate student Sergio Angel Monter will be giving a talk on his research.
The talk will be held next Friday, 11/02 at 2:30PM.
The location will be announced next week.

A.J. bet the presidency on a game of tic-tac-toe.
A warm welcome to acting presidents Nate and Michelle.
Sergio will give a probability talk 11/02.

Minutes 10/19/2007

October 25, 2007

Friday’s meeting was a small one due to the last minute scheduling.
The meeting was held in the Skiles lounge instead of room 255.
Mostly business was discussed at the meeting.

Here are the minutes from the meeting:

Item 1)
-Future Seminar Class-
President Friend announced plans to create a future math course.
The course would feature professors and graduate students sharing theirresearch.
The course would likely be set up to begin in the fall 2008 semester.
People who are interested should let the president know.

Item 2)
-Graduate Student Talk-
Graduate student Sergio Angel Monter will be giving a talk on his research.
The topic of the talk will be probability, and it will be held at 2:30PM on 11/02.
The location will likely be Skiles 255.

Item 3)
-Future Meeting Schedule-
It was agreed upon that for the time being, future “social” meetings will be held at 4:30PM every other Wednesday.
Social meetings are the ones spent playing card and board games.
A new type of meeting, “business” meetings, will be held on Thursdays.
These meetings will focus more on current mathematics research.
A more detailed schedule for these meetings will be released in the near future.

We’re going to have a meeting this Friday at 2:30pm in the Skiles Faculty Lounge, 236. Hopefully some people who haven’t been able to make it to the other meetings will be able to come.

Dr. Lacey will be giving a talk on applying to graduate school for math
majors at the next Club Math meeting Wednesday, October 10th,
at 5pm in Skiles 255.

Minutes 09/19/2007

September 21, 2007

Wednesday’s meeting was again held in Skiles room 255.
A good number of people showed up, including one person who skipped class to be there.

Here are the minutes from the meeting:

Item 1)
-High School Math Competition-
Nicole Larsen spoke about the competition and the need for volunteers.
Anyone interested in participating or writing questions should contact her at nlarsen@gatech.edu

Item 2)
-Yearly Dues-
Dues were changed from $10 per semester to $10 for the entire school year.
Dues should be paid to Treasurer Jon Ong.

Item 3)
-Flatland the Film-
The Secretary suggested using some dues money to purchase this movie on DVD.
It may even be possible to obtain the movie freely under academic license.
This matter will probably be voted on at the next meeting.

-Websites-
The club now officially has three different websites, so here’s a breakdown.

Item 5)
-Next Meeting-
Professor Lacey is expected to attend the next meeting and give a presentation on the application process for graduate schools.
This will not be for the entire meeting, so come even if you have already seen the presentation in the past.
The next meeting will be October 3 at 4:30PM in Skiles room 255.

In between these matters the meeting was spent playing Set, Spades and other games.

September 6, 2007

Today’s meeting was the first of the new semester.
There were lots of new faces and some old ones as well.
The meetings will NOT be at this time in the future, so don’t worry if you couldn’t make it.

The Secretary also learned after the meeting that there is currently no Math Representative in the SGA.
Contact the Secretary (that’s me) if you are interested in the position.

Item 1)
-Professor Heil-
The professor was kind enough to come to the first meeting.
He shared with everyone an unsolved problem in mathematics.
We also found out about the “HRT Conjecture”, named after him!

Item 2)
-WordPress Website-
A new weblog has been established for members to post about meetings and events.
Officers should let Webmaster Brian Benson know their email address to get authorship access.

Item 3)
-Semester Dues-
Dues for the semester will be $10.
Payment should be made to Treasurer Jon Ong at the earliest convenience.

Item 4)
-Mentoring Program-
A mentoring program for outreach to high schools was discussed.
Anyone interested should contact President A.J. Friend for more info or to sign up.
Any other ideas for activities should also be brought up during the next meeting.

Item 5)
-Meeting Times-
Everyone is currently trying to arrange a good time that people can make it out to.
Officers should post times that are good for them in the topic below the minutes on the weblog.

The rest of the meeting was spent eating subs, playing cards and figuring out how to get the little orange man to his square.
